Roger joined HG Law having led the Patents Team at British Telecommunications plc – one of the UK’s largest in-house departments – for a number of years. In his time at BT, Roger gained in-depth expertise in a wide range of communication-related technologies including information security, distributed systems, artificial intelligence, network operation, management and design, and speech and video coding.
As well as obtaining and defending patents on those technologies in jurisdictions around the world, Roger was instrumental in ensuring those patents assets were used. He has a good deal of experience of successfully asserting and licensing patents (including SEPs) to some of the world’s largest tech-based multinationals. In addition to that, Roger has knowledge and experience of obtaining intellectual property-based tax relief in the UK.
Roger also experience of being on the receiving end of patent assertions and litigations and has handled a number of cases both in the UK and US.
Roger’s stint at BT has seen him gain decades of experience of managing a global patent portfolio. He has learnt how to use ongoing targeted pruning to keep within a budget whilst having minimal impact on the value of the portfolio.
Outside of work, Roger enjoys walking, running, cycling, swimming and sailing around the great outdoors.
