Andy has a wide breadth of experience having worked as a patent attorney in private practice, as in-house intellectual property counsel and as an engineer in industry. Andy’s background is in the field of medical devices, completing a PhD in the design of an artificial heart, before working as Senior Engineer and Research Manager for a start-up medical device company who focused on developing artificial heart technology to a commercial level.
Andy transitioned from industry to private practice, where he built a client base around his medical device expertise, as well as servicing clients in the automotive, renewable energy and downhole technology sectors. Andy’s involvement in the automotive sector deepened when he was seconded from his law firm to a major US automotive firm, working for an extended period in the US and back in the UK. Eventually, Andy took on the role of IP Counsel for the automotive firm, managing the IP function for the firm in the UK.
Throughout his career, Andy has drafted and prosecuted hundreds of UK, European and PCT patent applications, and managed their prosecution globally. Andy has a particular interest in understanding clients’ IP needs and developing their IP strategy to best suit the commercial environment.
Outside of work Andy enjoys spending time travelling with family and working on classic vehicles, recently combining the two on a road trip across Europe.
