Technical Advisor / Patent Agent (San Jose, CA & New York, NY)

Job Description

Haley Guiliano LLP is a fast-growing law firm delivering its clients the highest levels of service in intellectual property. The firm’s offices are in San Jose, New York City, and London.  We are seeking talented engineers in our San Jose and New York offices to work on patent-related matters as Technical Advisors, and once registered, as Patent Agents. No previous legal training or experience is required.

A Technical Advisor/Patent Agent uses his or her technical background to understand our clients’ cutting-edge innovations and, with apprentice-style training, advocates for our clients world-wide before patent offices and in opposition to third parties. Daily tasks include conferring with inventors about their inventions, counseling clients on strategies for how to protect their inventions, preparing and prosecuting patent applications, defending our clients’ patents against third party challenges, and helping our clients when third parties have misappropriated our clients’ intellectual property.

Our Technical Advisors sit for the Patent Bar Exam administered by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office under the U.S. Department of Commerce to become a registered U.S. Patent Agent. While not a requirement, should a patent agent desire to attend law school, the firm will provide support for a part-time evening law school program.

Job Requirements

  • Exceptional English written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • A strong drive and willingness to own projects and see them to completion.
  • An engineering degree sufficient to sit for the Patent Bar Exam. This may be an undergraduate or advanced degree in computer engineering, computer science (ABET accredited only), electrical engineering, applied physics, or other similar disciplines. For more information, see https://www.uspto.gov/sites/default/files/OED_GRB.pdf
  • An excellent academic record.
  • Practical engineering experience is a plus, but not required.
