HG Law LLP is seeking an experienced Patent Agent or Patent Attorney with a strong electrical engineering background to join our team in San Jose. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution, particularly in semiconductor technologies.

Responsibilities:

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications in various technical fields with emphasis on electrical engineering technologies.
  • Coordinate large and complex patent portfolios in the U.S. and globally.
  • Perform third party rights analyses.
  • Mentor and support the professional development of junior staff.

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution as a Patent Agent or Patent Attorney.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering required; Advanced degree and/or industry experience in electrical engineering preferred.
  • Substantial patent drafting and prosecution experience for semiconductor technologies required.
  • Must be a registered patent agent before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Patent Attorney candidates must be admitted to the CA state bar
  • Strong academic credentials.
  • Strong technical writing skills with the ability to draft clear, concise, and accurate patent applications.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.

BENEFITS

Compensation: $130,000-$185,000 per year depending on experience, plus bonus eligibility

Technical Advisor (NYC) – June/July 2026

Our clients span diverse engineering and life sciences sectors and rely on HG’s technical expertise to support their success.

We are seeking talented engineers to join our New York or San Jose offices as Technical Advisors. In this apprenticeship-style role, you will work closely with senior attorneys and patent agents to provide clients with world-class IP services while building a foundation for a career in intellectual property law. No prior legal training is required.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with inventors to discuss and protect innovations.
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications.
  • Assist clients in asserting and defending IP rights.
  • Conduct competitive landscape analyses.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or applied physics, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Background in telecommunications, semiconductors, or circuit design a plus.
  • Eligible to become a registered patent agent before the USPTO.
  • Strong academic record, analytical ability, and communication skills.
  • Interest in learning new technologies quickly.
  • Proactive, with a drive to own projects through completion.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Starting base salary: $115,000 + year-end bonus eligibility.

2026 Summer Technical Advisor Internship

  • Title: Summer Technical Advisor Internship (Engineering)
  • Location: San Jose, CA & New York, NY
  • Job Type: Temporary full-time; June through August 2026
  • Compensation: $6,500/month

Our clients, who come to us from a vast array of engineering and life sciences sectors, have come to rely on HG’s technical know-how and understanding to support their success.

HG is actively seeking incoming Seniors or master’s students in Engineering programs (ME, EE, CE, Physics) to work on patent-related matters. HG’s interns work on patent-related matters as Technical Advisors. HG’s Technical Advisors work in an apprenticeship-style role with senior attorneys to provide our clients world-class IP services and build a solid foundation for a career in intellectual property law. A Technical Advisor uses their background and problem-solving skills to understand our clients’ cutting-edge innovations and efficiently handle our clients’ world-wide patent and legal matters. No previous legal training or experience is required.

Applicants should have the ability to work in-office, 5 days per week.

Job Qualifications

  • You are a senior working toward a B.S. in an Engineering discipline (EE, ME, CE, Physics, etc.) and will graduate in 2027.
  • Exceptional communications skills (written and oral).
  • Excellent analytical skills and a healthy imagination for problem solving.
  • A strong drive and willingness to own projects and see them to completion.
  • An excellent academic record.
  • Must be a self-starter with a healthy curiosity and an interest in developing a career in intellectual property.
  • Multi-dimensional interests. Whether you bring deep Star Trek knowledge or a refined love of cooking, we run best with interesting people.

Daily tasks include:

  • Confer with inventors about their inventions and how best to protect their innovation.
  • Prepare patent applications.
  • Counsel clients on strategies for how to protect their inventions.
  • Defend clients’ patents against third party challenges.
  • Help clients when third parties have misappropriated clients’ intellectual property.
  • Understand clients’ business and technological landscapes.
  • Learn intellectual property law.

This is a temporary position. It is a paid position but does not include HG’s standard employee benefits.
