OVERVIEW

Jim Leiz is a patent attorney who counsels clients in a wide range of intellectual property matters and technical disciplines, including medical monitors and devices, digital media delivery systems, the Internet, wireless communications, business methods, signal processing, and mechanical devices. He has developed a particular proficiency in counseling clients on intellectual property asset development and management strategies, advising clients how to best position their intellectual property portfolios to protect their commercial interests in the United States and abroad.

From small start-up companies to large domestic and international corporations, clients routinely seek Jim’s counsel concerning third-party patents, including conducting product clearances and rendering oral and written opinions of non-infringement and invalidity. He also advises on patent prosecution, reexaminations, opinion matters, interferences, intellectual property transactions, and patent litigation support in addition to intellectual property due diligence for acquisitions of private and public companies.

Jim began his patent law career in 1999 at the law firm of Fish & Neave, where he worked until its merger with Ropes & Gray in 2005. He worked at Ropes & Gray until he founded Shvarts & Leiz in 2011, where he worked until 2017 when Shvarts & Leiz merged with the patent practice spin-off of Ropes & Gray to form Haley Guiliano.
